Here are some ways to slide back into reality without it bringing your down:

Give your home a fresh look. After you've un-decked the halls, you'll have a fresh perspective of your home's interior. Re-arrange your furniture for a refreshing start to the new year. Make it a White Christmas: White Hydrangea for $10!

OK, the chances of a white Christmas in the Valley of the Sun are pretty slim, but you CAN make your own white Christmas on your dining table or fireplace mantel using our December Fresh Ten special: Three stems of white hydrangea for just $10.

Hydrangea are extremely easy to work with and don't require a lot of "extras" to make a beautiful arrangement. We give some examples below of DIY hydrangea centerpieces for the holidays.

Idea #1: Simply place all three stems in a vase you have at home. In this example, we used a 5" cube. (We wrapped a stem of curly willow into the inside of the vase to create a "grid" to secure the hydrangea stems first.) Voila! You have an elegant, snowy centerpiece for $10.

Idea #2: You can easily add a pop of color to your arrangement using red roses, tulips, or other red flowers. Simply insert them right into the head of the hydrangea.

Idea #3: If you want to give it more of a Christmas feel, add some Christmas greenery from your Christmas tree, or pick some up at our store when buying your Fresh Ten bunch.

Idea #4: Another way to add color to your arrangement is with ribbon. Make loops of the ribbon with wire picks.

Insert three or more of them in the hydrangea for a festive touch.

Idea #5: We love this hydrangea display. Isn't it breathtaking? Would you believe that there is NOTHING else to these centerpieces than hydrangea? There are four stems in each vase, so this would require four Fresh Ten bunches. That's only $40 for an amazing centerpiece display.

We're proud to announce that our own Hilary Torfin took 3rd place in the "Designer of the Year" competition at the Arizona State Florist Association expo this past Sunday! Contestants brought in their own bridal piece to be judged, and they also had a live "surprise package" competition in which they were given a bucket of the same flowers and tools to create a bridal bouquet in 30 minutes.
Hilary also received her certification as an Arizona Master Florist. She has taken courses for months to earn this high level of achievement.

Hilary works in our Chandler store, and has often shared her talent in our Fresh Ten Films. Congratulations, Hilary!

You Received a Potted Orchid - Now What?

Potted orchids are a popular gift these days. It's no wonder why; they add a delicate beauty to any room and give you a feeling of exotic luxury (like sitting on a beach in Hawaii!). Cactus Flower is currently offering a special on orchids in a funky green tin pot or glazed ceramic pot for $30 and $40, respectively.
Orchids are a great choice for a long-lasting gift. With proper care, orchids can last several weeks if not months! Here are some care tips for the phalaenopsis orchid, which is the type in our special.
Light
The phalaenopsis orchid prefers low light, preferably from the north or east. You will know if it's getting enough sunlight by the color of the leaves: Too dark means not enough, and yellowing leaves mean too much. If the leaves are bright green, the lighting is perfect.
Temperature
Orchids are happiest in temperatures that make YOU comfortable. Daytime temps of 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit and nighttime temps of 60-65 degrees are ideal. Orchids prefer this fluctuation in temperature, and without it, may refuse to flower. They also prefer some humidity as they are native to the rain forest, so bathrooms with indirect sunlight are the perfect household location. If you live in Phoenix, you may want to increase your plant's access to moisture by placing your plant in a shallow dish of pebbles and water, keeping the water below the top of the pebbles. Don't let the pot touch the water or the roots could rot.
Watering
As a general rule, water your orchid once every 5-7 days. Let the orchid dry out between waterings, and never allow it to sit in excess water.
When finished blooming
When the last bloom drops, cut the stem halfway down. Continue caring for it just as you have for weeks and cross your fingers for a possible rebloom!

Store Location Update

As many of you have noticed, we have been in the process of moving all of our services and deliveries out of our Scottsdale & Bell Rd location and into our original store at Scottsdale Rd & Mercer Ln for many months. As of Friday, 2/20, the Scottsdale & Bell Rd store has officially closed. We have enjoyed this large space for over a decade, but times were very different when we broke ground at this location 10 years ago. Like many small businesses, our business strategy must follow market trends in order for us to succeed.
Our delivery zones have not been affected by this move. In fact, we are in the process of looking for a new north Valley location that will allow us to expand our delivery zones even further north.
We have also opened a new location in Chandler at Alma School & Germann Rds to expand our services in the east Valley.
As our business continues to evolve, we appreciate your loyalty and are grateful for allowing us to be there for all of your life's most special moments.

Not everyone is great at articulating their feelings, whether it's expressing condolences in a time of loss or telling someone how important they are in our lives. So what do you say when you don't know what to say? We'd like to help our customers with that, but first we need YOUR help.

During the month of August, we'd like to collect some clever card messages for different occasions. Each week, we'll ask for a card message for a specific occasion that can be emailed, written on our Facebook wall, or direct messaged to us on Twitter. We'll choose a message that we think is the most clever or unique and send that person an arrangement! At the end of the month, we'll compile the messages and offer them as ideas to customers as they are checking out on our website.

Thanks to the wonderful world of website analytics, we have learned that people actually stumble upon our website on the quest for cactus plants . We found a local partner in Glendale, AZ, who grows his own saguaros, organ pipe cactus, barrel cactus and more - and ships them around the country via Priority Mail! We are thrilled to be sending a piece of the beautiful Sonoran Desert to the rest of the country.

We also found some great tips on growing cacti and succelents at the Valley's Desert Botanical Gardens' website. They even offer a plant hotline to answer your questions on growing desert plants!

Prom is just around the corner, and for the first time ever Cactus Flower is introducing a line of cutting-edge prom corsages, boutonnieres, and even body flowers (also known as flower tattoos). These were some of the topics covered in our last two Tinsel Training classes, held at our Bell Rd location. Customers joined us for hands-on training on decorating the tree, mantel, and holiday table, as well as how to spruce up and display wreaths and garlands. Designers Leonard Chavez and Christine Price not only taught basic design principles, but industry secrets on pulling off the designer look in your home this holiday season.

The most popular arrangement was designed by Tonia Miller from our Bell Rd location. Tonia Miller serves as design manager, inspiring the team with cutting edge floral décor. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, about 178,480 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. The mission of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to increase knowledge of breast cancer issues, particularly regarding early detection.

Cactus Flower is pleased to announce a partnership with Making Strides against Breast Cancer, a national walk that supports the American Cancer Society¹s research and support programs for breast cancer patients and their families. For the month of October, Cactus Flower will donate 20% of the sales of the Tribute to Toshiko arrangement to Making Strides against Breast Cancer.

About the Tribute to Toshiko arrangement: Toshiko Sasaki has been a designer at Cactus Flower¹s north Scottsdale location for 6 ½ years. In March of this year, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. While she was receiving treatment, Toshiko inspired us by her positive attitude and her dedication to her job as a floral designer. Toshiko says she continued working through treatment because she loves the work and especially loves the people. Toshiko¹s warm smile has never left her face because she has peace in her heart despite her diagnosis. On September 25th, we celebrated her birthday AND her last chemo treatment. This arrangement was designed by design manager Tonia Miller in honor of Toshiko.
